Full-Time Family Assistant Needed | Upper West Side, NYC

Upper West Side, Manhattan
Two Boys, Ages 9 & 13
Live-Out | Full-Time | Long-Term

A warm, thoughtful, and organized single father on the Upper West Side is seeking an experienced Family Assistant to help support his household and two sons, ages 9 and 13. He is a hands-on parent who values open communication, mutual respect, and building long-term relationships with the people who become part of his family’s life.

The position combines household support with active, engaged time with the boys in the afternoons. Because the children are older and fairly independent, the childcare component is relatively light, typically no more than about three hours per day.

What matters most to the family is finding someone dependable who is looking for a long-term position and hopes to become a trusted part of the household for years to come.

About the Family

The family consists of a father and his two sons, ages 9 and 13. Both boys are excellent students and are social, energetic, respectful, and close with one another. The younger son enjoys basketball, guitar lessons, and a variety of after-school activities. The older son is increasingly independent and enjoys martial arts.

The boys tend to warm up quickly to adults who take a genuine interest in them. The ideal candidate enjoys working with children in this age range, can keep pace with their energy, sets warm but firm boundaries, and knows how to connect with them as they grow.

Position Details

Schedule: Monday through Friday, approximately 10:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Approximately 40 hours per week, with flexibility for the occasional early start or later evening.

Ideal Start Date: the beginning of August, 2026

Location: Upper West Side, Manhattan.

The family’s apartment is located two blocks from school and one block from Central Park. All of the boys’ activities are within walking distance, so no driving is required. The building has a 24-hour doorman and front desk.

Time with the Boys

Responsibilities include:

  • Picking up the younger son from school, along with the occasional early morning school drop-off.
  • Getting the boys to activities and appointments, including basketball, martial arts, doctor visits, and occasional errands.
  • Spending afternoons in Central Park for scooter riding, sports, and outdoor activities.
  • Preparing dinner for the boys each evening, along with a healthy after-school snack.

Around the House

The Family Assistant will be the father’s primary partner in helping keep the household running smoothly.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing dinner each evening. Ideally, the right candidate will feel comfortable preparing meals for the whole family.
  • Washing dishes, loading and unloading the dishwasher, and keeping the kitchen clean and organized.
  • Family laundry – approximately 3x per week (the laundry room is located on the ground floor), including changing bed linens once a week.
  • Helping maintain the apartment’s cleanliness and organization day-to-day, including light vacuuming and bathroom upkeep.
  • Keeping the home tidy and organized.
  • Light grocery shopping (the father handles most of it) and monitoring household supplies so essential items remain stocked.
  • Taking out the trash.
  • Letting in deliveries, contractors, or service providers when needed.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation starts at $45/hour, paid legally on a W-2. Candidates who are comfortable taking on a greater level of household support and Family Assistant responsibilities, such as preparing meals for the father and ironing clothing, may be considered for a higher rate based on experience and the overall scope of the role.

Any hours worked over 40 in a week will be paid at the applicable overtime rate

Benefits:

  • Two weeks of paid vacation
  • One week of paid sick leave
  • Eight paid holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
  • A year-end holiday bonus
  • MTA reimbursement
  • CPR and First Aid certification reimbursement for the right candidate if certification is not current

In addition to the PTO listed above, the family regularly provides paid time off when the father is working from home, traveling with the boys, or otherwise does not require coverage. Historically, this has added up to at least two additional weeks of paid time off annually and can occasionally approach a month, often in week-long stretches.

Confidentiality and discretion are important. The family asks that all personal information, routines, and travel plans remain private and not be shared publicly or on social media.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in a Family Assistant, Nanny, Housekeeper, Household Assistant, or similar role
  • Previous experience caring for school-aged children and pre-teens, either professionally or personally
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Excellent professional references
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Reliable, dependable, proactive, and energetic
  • CPR and First Aid certified, or willing to obtain/renew certification

Who They’re Hoping to Find

Above all, the family is seeking someone dependable, communicative, and proactive who naturally takes ownership of their role and enjoys being an active contributor to the household. Experience with children in the 9-to-13 age range is important, along with the ability to engage older children in a way that reflects where they are developmentally. The ideal candidate will be warm and consistent, able to hold boundaries when needed, and equally comfortable giving the boys room to become more independent.

The boys benefit from structure and support, but they are also growing into young adults. The right person will appreciate that balance and genuinely enjoy this stage of childhood.

The father is a hands-on, involved parent who treats the person working in his home with respect and as an important part of the household. He also takes the time to organize the calendar and establish clear household routines so everyone is on the same page. He hopes to find someone who values that same relationship and is looking to build a long-term partnership with the family.
